The State Government has allocated $64,817 to community road safety initiatives across Western Australia in an effort to make its roads safer.
Five community groups in the Central Wheatbelt electorate have been awarded grants as part of the latest funding round, to promote the road safety message at local events.
Member for Central Wheatbelt Hon Mia Davies MLA said the five groups would receive a combined $4020.
“These projects are among 29 throughout the State to receive funding during this round of the program,” Ms Davies said.
”The successful projects highlight the importance of community involvement in working together to save lives. Our regional communities are being affected by an unacceptably high road toll, and it is pleasing to see that community members are proactively collaborating to spread the important road safety message.”
The successful local projects include –
Wongan Hills Progress Association Inc - Wongan Hills Harvest Festival ($1000)
Avon Valley Arts Society - Northam Art Prize ($800)
Northam Golf Club - Northam Golf Police Legacy Day ($800)
Shire of Bruce Rock – 2016 Back to the Bush Veterans Reunion ($1000)
Nungarin Community Resource Centre Inc- Nungarin Home Grown Festival ($420)
“It is extremely concerning to me that in 2015 the Wheatbelt was one of the worst regions for fatalities and critical injuries (per capita) on our roads, in WA. Spreading the road safety message plays an integral part in ensuring our regional roads become safer,” she said.
“I urge local community groups to consider applying for this funding for their next event.”
This financial year, the State Government allocated a record $146 million from the Road Trauma Trust Account for road safety initiatives.
Applications for the next rounds of the program close on the first Friday in October and December, 2016.
