The Geraldton Cultural Trust raised a new WA flag today, presented by Nationals WA Member of Parliament and candidate for the seat of Geraldton Paul Brown MP.
The flag was raised on the original flagpole of the ‘Residency’ that was built in 1862.
“The Residency has a rich history, being the first ‘official government’ building as the home of the Resident Magistrate of the day.
The Residency has continued to serve the Geraldton community for the last 154 years, as a maternity hospital from 1925 to 1967 and as a home for community groups to this present day.” Mr Brown said.
“The Geraldton Cultural Trust call the Residency home and with 37 community groups using the facility and 576 members, the building is a hive of activity and diversity.”
The Geraldton Cultural Trust also has a rich history in Geraldton beginning in 1868 as the Geraldton Workingmen’s Society, which evolved into the Geraldton Cultural Trust in 1901. The Trust has occupied the Residency since 1982 and purchased the building freehold from the state government in 2006.
