Grants to drive regional road safety initiatives

For more information, contact Dave Grills (Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region).

Road safety initiatives in the Mining and Pastoral Region will benefit from the latest round of grants from the State Government's Road Trauma Trust Account.

Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC said the funding, announced today, would support events and projects in the Kimberley, Mid West and Goldfields-Esperance regions aimed at reducing road trauma.

"Driver education combined with safer roads and enforcement are key to reducing the unacceptably high death toll on our country roads," Mr Grills said.

"The government can build better roads and strongly enforce traffic regulations but ultimately we also need to encourage safer driving behaviour.

"These grants are designed to spread the road safety message at the grassroots level and educate local motorists about the risks we can face on our roads.”

Successful projects in the Mining and Pastoral Region:

Having previously worked at major crash and road safety units with the WA Police, Mr Grills said he was pleased that more funding had been allocated from the Road Trauma Trust Account for road safety initiatives.

"A record $145.7 million was allocated in the 2016-17 State Budget for proven road safety initiatives over 2016-17," Mr Grills said.

"Some of the road safety measures for regional areas include new overtaking lanes, wire rope barriers, audible line edging and road widening.”

While progress had been made, Mr Grills said he would like to see greater priority given to road safety measures in regional areas.

“There may be a case for using Royalties for Regions funding to complement and expand existing regional road safety and driver training programs,” Mr Grills said.

“However, I reject proposals to use Royalties for Regions to fix roads as I believe this is an unacceptable cost shift. Such essential works should be funded from consolidated revenue.”

Grants are available for projects that focus on the Safe System approach that aligns with Towards Zero 2008-2020, the State Government’s road safety strategy.
