Water Corporation customers in Frankland, Ongerup and Jerramungup will benefit from an $8.2 million investment to upgrade water treatment plants in the three towns.
Member for Wagin Terry Waldron MLA has today welcomed the upgrades.
“This is great news for residents in these Wagin electorate communities,” Mr Waldron said.
“Work in Ongerup and Jerramungup had started and is expected to be completed mid-year.”
“All three of these projects include upgrades to filtration and disinfection systems in the treatment plants, which will improve water quality for Water Corporation customers in these townships.”
The Ongerup and Jerramungup projects will also include upgrades to the power supply to the plants and water transfer pumps, improving efficiency and reliability.
Mr Waldron said Frankland's water treatment plant was the first to be worked upon, with the local project completed in October 2016.
“I’m pleased to see local expertise is being used in this State Government project, with contractors hailing from Katanning, Mount Barker and Albany,” he said.
Water for Frankland, Ongerup and Jerramungup is sourced from local dams, and then transferred to a water treatment plant where it is made safe for drinking before it is supplied to customers.
Nationals WA candidate for Roe Peter Rundle said these projects identified the importance of water as a finite natural resource and recognised the Government’s commitment to conserving water supplies.
“Living in the Great Southern region myself, I am well aware of the water shortages that have been experienced over the years and the negative, sometimes even catastrophic effects, this can have on farmers, businesses, residents and in emergency situations such as fires,” Mr Rundle.
“Therefore, I strongly support the State Government in its efforts to implement water saving projects like these.”
In November 2016, the State Government embarked on an $8 million program to improve water quality in further regional WA communities, namely Cue, Meekatharra, Mount Magnet and Sandstone.
