Nationals Member for the South West Region Colin Holt MLC has congratulated not-for-profit aged care organisation Quambie Park Inc. on their successful application to the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).
The $1,674,940 grant will go towards the Waroona Housing Options Village to provide affordable accommodation for the aged, including the construction of nine disability modified accommodation units as well as a community hub building and communal gardens.
The Building Better Regions Fund is aimed at regional, rural and remote areas, and has been established to ensure that smaller councils in rural areas will not have to compete with major capital city councils for funding.
Federal Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash announced the successful applicants for funding under the BBRF’s Community Investments Stream last week.
“It’s very hard for smaller and more remote community and volunteer groups or small councils to compete for funding against big capital city councils who have the ability to employ consultants to write grant applications”, Minister Nash said.
Mr Holt said that he had hosted Minister Nash on her visit to the area earlier in the year and was pleased that the importance of the Waroona Housing Options Village had been recognised.
“These types of projects are critically important to regional areas as they provide aged people with the opportunity to remain living in their own communities, close to friends, family and support networks as well as the social and economic benefits to towns” Mr Holt said.
Quambie Park Inc. Chairman Mike Walmsley said that the project will provide a purpose-designed, economically sustainable and affordable accommodation model for aged people in Waroona.
The Nationals WA have condemned the Labor Government for failing to guarantee that Royalties for Regions funding granted to the project by the previous government will be honoured.
