Five community groups in the Kimberley are set to take up the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour,thanks to support from the Liberal National Government.
The Kimberley groups are among 37 successful recipients to share in $798,442 from the State Government’s crime prevention grants program.
Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC said grassroots crime prevention measures played a significant role in regional communities.
“As a former police officer who served in the regions, I am all too aware of the impacts of crime on community wellbeing,” Mr Grills said.
“I also know first-hand how important crime prevention initiatives are and how beneficial they have proven to be in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.”
Mr Grills congratulated the successful organisations for their forward-thinking approach.
“I strongly support these organisations for stepping up and being prepared to make a difference,” he said.
“They know it’s a big problem in their communities, though they realise every effort helps. They are still prepared to do what they can to reduce crime and assist wayward adults and youth.”
The successful projects in the electorate target violence prevention, engage at-risk youth and promote community engagement and crime prevention messages.
Mr Grills said a number of other successful projects would assist communities in the North-West and Pilbara regions.
Crime prevention priorities include:

prevention and early intervention to address the needs of children and families;

youth justice and reducing re-offending;
-
preventing and responding to anti-social behaviour;

addressing and reducing drug and alcohol-related crime; and
-
addressing and reducing high volume crime.
Nationals WA candidate for Kimberley Rob Houston also showed his strong support for the program.
“I’m very pleased to see the State Government continue to show its dedication to making our communities safer through tough laws and providing police and other organisations with the resources they needed to combat crime and anti-social behaviour,” Mr Houston said.

The State Government has allocated $1,050,000 for community crime prevention grants in 2016-17.
