Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC has welcomed the start of a $3.3 million upgrade to the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre.
Mr Grills said his Nationals WA colleague Minister for Sport and Recreation Mia Davies and Nationals WA candidate for the Kimberley Rob Houston inspected construction activity at the local pool on Friday.
“This upgrade has been made possible by a $1.25 million grant to the Shire of Broome through the State Government’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF),” Mr Grills said.
The Shire of Broome will contribute the remaining funding.
Mr Grills said a complete rebuild of the centre’s plant room and replacement of the filtration system would increase the capacity and efficiency of the pool, resulting in financial, environmental and health benefits for the Broome community.
“A new concourse and tiling for the pool and surrounding wet area will also improve the visual amenity of the facility,” he said.
Other upgrades include renewing the swimming pool bulk heads, resurfacing the children’s lagoon and improving pool lighting.
Mr Grills said the significant refurbishments would entice more locals to utilise the centre.
“Improved facilities will attract more people to visit and participate in sport and recreational activities,” Mr Grills said.
“Research shows that when people are healthy and active this benefits both their physical health and their minds. By boosting people’s mental health this ensures they are better connected within their communities.”
Mr Houston said the refurbishment would allow the local shire to provide activities year-round and encourage more people to use the facilities during the cooler months.
He said the CSRFF program exemplified the State Government’s commitment to the development of sustainable infrastructure for sport and recreation across the State.
“This grants program has a direct benefit to participation in community and grassroots sport and recreation programs. It is a valuable initiative because providing quality sporting facilities throughout WA encourages people of all ages and abilities to be healthy and active, he said.
The CSRFF has funded more than 1000 projects across WA since 2008, worth $157 million.
