South West Nationals MLC James Hayward has called for events to be re-scheduled following the cancellation of Country Week due to COVID19 restrictions in Perth.
“This is the second year in a row that regional students have missed out on Country Week, which is such an important and formative event in the lives of our students” said Mr Hayward.
Students from across the South West region had to cancel plans at short notice following restrictions being introduced in the Perth and Peel regions on Sunday, many of whom had already travelled to Perth.
Mr Hayward continued “While everyone agrees that keeping COVID under control is important, we also need to be flexible in ensuring our current generation of students do not miss out on experiences previous generations had the benefit of enjoying”.
Despite the considerable logistical headaches it would create for all concerned, Mr Hayward hoped Country Week could be rescheduled in the near future, so students would not miss out on their opportunity to participate in the event.
He has called on the McGowan Government to consider allocating resources to ensure that accommodation and travel arrangements could be transferred to another date, considering the substantial sums schools, parents and students had contributed themselves or fundraised from their communities.
“I am concerned that one of the major side effects of the WA Government’s COVID response is the disenfranchisement of children who are missing out on important life experiences” said Mr Hayward.
“I hope that the McGowan Government considers mitigating these impacts on our children by doing everything possible to reschedule and reorganise Country Week, working with school communities to make it happen, whatever it takes.”
