The Nationals candidate for Central Wheatbelt, Lachlan Hunter has demanded an end to Labor’s relentless attacks on families who enjoy fishing, four-wheel-driving and recreational shooting, labelling it a “War on the Weekend.”
“WA Labor has made enjoying simple pastimes with your family harder and harder,” Mr Hunter said.
“Instead of fixing our hospitals or addressing the housing crisis, they’ve focused on ideologically driven policies which punish WA families and outdoor enthusiasts. It’s time for this nonsense to stop.”
Mr Hunter criticised WA Labor’s reckless treatment of the fishing community, highlighting the impact on local families, businesses and tourism.
Mr Hunter also commented on Labor’s failure to prioritise long-promised legislation for off-road vehicles and that it had frustrated the community and left some four-wheel-driving areas in unusable condition.
“This legislation would have made it easier to register vehicles and ensured funding to help local governments maintain off-road areas, but Labor failed to deliver,” Mr Hunter said.
“This neglect has led to some councils in places like Albany, Esperance and Gingin considering banning access for four-wheel-driving altogether.
“The Nationals WA will make off-road vehicle legislation a priority, ensuring better management, improved facilities, and opening up more areas for families to explore and enjoy.”
Mr Hunter also condemned Labor’s treatment of WA’s 90,000 law-abiding firearms owners, describing their approach as draconian and out-of-touch.
“Labor’s firearms laws unfairly target ordinary West Australians who follow the rules, treating them like criminals for simply owning a firearm,” Mr Hunter said.
“Recreational shooters inject up to $38 million a year into WA’s economy, much of it spent in regional areas like my electorate of Central Wheatbelt on fuel, groceries, accommodation and supplies. Labor’s disregard for this community and its economic contribution is shameful.”
Mr Hunter reaffirmed The Nationals’ commitment to rewriting WA Labor’s botched firearm laws.
“The Nationals WA are the only Party which has stood with the firearms community from day one, fighting to stop Labor’s laws and committing to a fair, balanced rewrite which protects public safety without punishing law-abiding owners.”
“The Nationals WA will end Labor’s ideological assault on how you choose to spend your weekend – be it up a bush track, on the range, or down at the beach with your family.”
“The Nationals are fighting to take back our weekends –join the battle by voting 1 for The Nationals WA on March 8.”
