Independent living options for elderly residents in Leonora have just become a whole lot brighter with
the announcement today that a sixteen unit, independent living village will be constructed in the town.
Making the announcement in Leonora today, Member for Kalgoorlie, Wendy Duncan MLA said that a facility had long been on the wish list for the town and it was satisfying to see that it will now be a reality.
“The independent living village will be funded by $9.2 million of Royalties for Regions and be designed and constructed to best practice principles to support ‘ageing in place’ which enables residents to remain in their community and living independently for as long as they are able,” Ms Duncan said.
“With Leonora and surrounding communities projected to follow the Australian trend of a higher proportion of population being older Australians over time, the importance of servicing the health and lifestyle needs of the older residents of Leonora and surrounding communities is vital.”
Candidate for Kalgoorlie, Tony Crook, who was also present at the announcement added that currently there are no independent living options for elderly residents within the Shire of Leonora meaning that residents may need to access Home And Community Care (HACC) Services or even face the possibility of moving away from town.
“Improving regional lifestyle and the liveability of towns in the Northern Goldfields is key to retaining and attracting population and workforce,” Mr Crook said.
“The delivery of this project will enable older residents to remain in Leonora close to family and friends and services they are familiar with, while maintaining their routine and lifestyle.”
Ms Duncan said that the construction of the village would include:-
o 16 independent-living units using best practice planning and ageing in place principles.
o Caretaker accommodation (1 unit of the 16) and facilities to provide assistance, security,
care and maintenance.
o A common area for residents to get together, socialise and create a sense of belonging. This
space will also be available to community groups for events and activities for older residents
of both the village and broader community.
o A multi-use room which will be used by visiting health and community services, local
community groups and clubs.
Overall the addition of this facility to the Leonora community will provide a service that enables the elderly to maintain their independence and lifestyle whilst adding to the sustainability and liveability of the town.
