Member for Moore Shane Love has urged Transport Minister Rita Saffioti to urgently source funding for the solution to fish kills and poor water quality in the Jurien Bay Marina.
“Twenty years of frequent fish kills in the Jurien Bay Marina has to be the absolute limit,” Mr Love said.
Given the awful stench experienced by Jurien Bay locals with each fish kill, Mr Love said the environmental and commercial consequences for the local community were devastating.
“Efforts to promote Jurien Bay and surrounds as a destination on the Turquoise Coast are meanwhile hampered, as are further developments in the Marina precinct” Mr Love added.
“I chaired a steering committee that oversaw Department of Transport studies investigating wind, wave and weed movement spanning six years.
“The business case for the spur groyne is complete and the Minister insisted last September that planning and environmental approvals were underway and she was sourcing funding.
“I have again written to the Minister seeking action, the solution is clear and the minister needs to come up with the funds.”
Mr Love said last year’s state budget saw an $5.8 billion operating surplus with another massive surplus expected this year.
“The state government needs to come up with the funds to fix the marina – a state owned asset – and avert any further environmental disasters,” he said.
