Five events in the greater Avon region have secured sponsorship through the 2016/17 Royalties for Regions-funded Regional Events Scheme (RES), and Nationals MPs want you to give them a go.
The Avon Descent, Beverley Heroic, York Gourmet Food and Wine Festival, Northam Motorsport Festival and York Motorsport Festival were announced yesterday as local recipients of sponsorship from this year’s $850,000 funding pool.
Member for Central Wheatbelt Hon Mia Davies MLA welcomed the funding, saying much needed support assists communities to hold world class events in regional WA.
“The Avon Valley has untapped potential in developing its tourism industry,” Ms Davies said.
“If we are serious about promoting regional WA as a world-class tourist destination, we need to continue to support events to draw local, interstate and overseas interest.
“The RES is supporting these events and capitalising on the region’s natural advantages.”
Nationals Member for the Agricultural Region Martin Aldridge MLC said the funding allowed established events to get better and new events to get off the ground.
“Events like the Avon Descent have been successful over many years, but I am also pleased to see support for lesser known and newer events,” Mr Aldridge said.
“The more there is to do in the Wheatbelt, the more attractive it becomes to tourists.”
The MPs issued a challenge to locals and visitors alike to get behind local events.
“The Avon Valley is one of the best places in Western Australia to visit – it is close to Perth and with drawcard events like these allow people to realise that,” Ms Davies said.
“Whatever your interest, I challenge you to get down to one of the RES events near you.”
