The Nationals WA have backed Albany airport upgrades, committing $14 million to the project which would deliver long-awaited improvements to unlock the potential of the region.
Candidate for Albany Scott Leary, said this commitment for communities across the electorate is a key feature in his vision for a strong future for Albany.
“Albany Regional Airport is our region’s gateway – servicing almost 70,000 passengers in the last 12 months alone: people visiting our towns and locals relying on the connectivity to Perth,”
“Air travel is a crucial service for any community, and our airport has long needed crucial upgrades to enhance safety, ensure the runway’s usability, and cement Albany as a tourism hub, paving the way for future interstate flights and economic growth.”
“It’s also a lifeline for patients traveling to Perth for specialist medical care and for bringing essential medical professionals to Albany. The Royal Flying Doctor Service completes more than 900 flights annually from Albany.” Mr. Leary said.
“This isn’t just about Albany – this $14 million commitment benefits communities across the Great Southern, Albany and Plantagenet, from Denmark to Katanning and Jerramungup.”
In Albany to make the announcement today, Nationals Leader Shane Love said the commitment underscores the party’s dedication to strengthening essential infrastructure which supports local communities and drives economic growth.
“Albany Airport is the lifeline of the Great Southern, supporting vital health, education, and government services while connecting businesses to opportunity and a more than 300 strong FIFO workforce who bolster the local economy.
“Furthermore, emergency water bombers rely on the airport to deliver critical firefighting capabilities.” Mr. Love said.
“With the uncertainty surrounding REX Airlines, currently in administration, the urgency for upgrades has never been greater. A new air service provider may require larger aircraft, which the current infrastructure simply cannot support.”
“Scott is the only candidate thinking for the region beyond an election cycle – he has a vision for the Albany electorate and as part of The Nationals WA team, he will deliver.”
