The Nationals WA have called for more support from the State Government to address crime and antisocial behaviour in Geraldton and the Mid West region.
Candidate for Geraldton Kirrilee Warr said a spate of recent incidents had left families and businesses feeling frustrated and forgotten.
“I am receiving feedback around crime and antisocial behaviour on a daily basis, and it feels as though the situation is at risk of boiling over without urgent intervention from the State Government,” Ms Warr said.
“In recent weeks the community has had to put up with some shocking and sickening incidents, including allegations of young offenders stealing a vehicle and hooning through the streets at high speeds, through to the senseless killings of pet chickens.”
Ms Warr called on State Government to consider deploying additional police from Operation Regional Shield to Geraldton and the Mid West before the end of the year.
“Local police are doing their best with the resources they have, but they need more support, especially with the holiday season approaching,” Ms Warr said.
“An increased police presence could significantly help curb these issues and reduce tension in the community.”
Ms Warr also pointed to WA Police statistics showing crime was skyrocketing in the suburbs of Geraldton.
“Police statistics prove it has been a dreadful 2024 for Geraldton, with 4,491 offences recorded in the first six months of the year alone, including more than 70 motor vehicle thefts and over 1,600 charges of stealing and property damage.
“If this trend continues, 2024 will be on track for almost 9,000 offences – a massive increase from last year which saw a record 8,070 charges.
In June, Ms Warr and The Nationals supported a petition calling for increased law enforcement in Geraldton and Mullewa, as well as greater wrap-around services like crime prevention and targeted support for at-risk youth.
“It feels as though this petition has fallen on the deaf ears of the Cook Labor Government,” Ms Warr said.
“The lack of action is leaving families, visitors and businesses feeling abandoned, frustrated and vulnerable, and it’s clear that a circuit breaker is needed to keep the community safe and put a stop to escalating crime and anti-social behaviour in the region.
“I urge the State Government to act swiftly to bolster resources to ensure the safety of Geraldton and surrounding communities,” Ms Warr said.
