Member for Geraldton Kirrilee Warr MLA has called for the Cook Labor Government to invest in Geraldton’s water security to ensure there is a proper quality water supply to support the growing region.
Water is among the resources which are needed for growth, and a 2023 study from the State Government found there wasn’t enough ground water to meet projected demand in the Mid West, and climate-resilient water sources were needed to ensure supply for development.
Ms Warr called for the State Government to follow through on its findings.
“For years Geraldton has been limited by its resources, which are the building blocks of our society,” she said.
“Investment in our water security would go a long way to ensuring Geraldton and the surrounding communities can grow.
“Our farming, mining, and urban areas all rely heavily on water so we need to ensure there is a long-term plan to securing supply for Geraldton.”
Ms Warr called for clarification on the work that has been done for the desalination plant set for the Oakajee Strategic Industrial Area ahead of the State Budget announcement next month.
In the 2025-26 budget, it was announced that the second phase of a water supply study would take place for Oakajee, which has been flagged as prime industrial development for years.
Ms. Warr said the State Government had been silent, 10 months after the announcement.
“Phase one of the water supply study was completed in 2023, and phase two has funding, but we are yet to hear anything about this,” she said.
“The Cook Labor Government must provide an update on this, and address how it aims to solve Geraldton’s water supply concerns going forward.”
Ms Warr also called for infrastructure to support water conditioning in Geraldton.
“People are simply asking for the same treatment as those living in Perth, and I urge the State Government to consider this infrastructure to ensure the future of the largest city north of Perth.”
