The slow decimation of the local government sector continues as the Cook Labor Government attempts to ram through a Bill which aims to force local governments to pay back funds lawfully received under the current rating system.
Shadow Minister for Local Government Kirrilee Warr MLA says the State Government is blocking amendments to the Local Government Amendment (Rating of Certain Mining Licences) Bill 2025 which would allow local governments to apply for funding through the Royalties for Regions Country Local Government Fund.
This funding would ensure local governments would not be left out of pocket when it came to refunding rates on miscellaneous licences.
Ms Warr said the decision from the State Government showed a clear lack of understanding from Labor for local governments.
“Local governments in the regions have told me this bill could have dire consequences for their respective areas,” Ms Warr said.
“The amount to be paid back if this bill is passed would no doubt have an impact on the services certain local governments can deliver.
“The decision not to allow local governments to access funding to pay back funds the Supreme Court found lawful to rate is yet another example of this State Government’s top-down approach for the sector.”
Ms Warr said she will work with her upper house colleagues to amend the Bill.
“We want to ensure local governments are not left out of pocket when it comes to this clear example of State Government overreach.”
