The Nationals WA will throw their full support behind a motion in the Legislative Council to disallow the Firearms Regulations 2024.
The motion, brought forward in the Upper House today, reflects growing concern that the regulations are unworkable and treat law-abiding firearms owners like criminals.
If successful, the disallowance motion could force the Cook Labor Government to go back to the drawing board and re-write the regulations – providing an opportunity to deliver rules that are practical, evidence based and involve genuine consultation with the community.
Hon Julie Freeman MLC said the Nationals had been steadfast in their support to the Western Australian firearms community.
“We were the only party to oppose the Firearms Bill when it was debated and rammed through the Parliament in 2024.”
“We have always stood by farmers, sporting shooters, hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, and regional families, and advocated for reforms that are fair and practical”.
Hon Rob Horstman MLC echoed those sentiments, highlighting the Nationals’ long record of standing up for WA’s firearms community.
“These regulations won’t take illegal guns off the street. All they do is make life harder for the people who do the right thing. The Nationals WA will keep fighting until we have a system that works.”
The Nationals WA undertook extensive consultation across the state, holding community forums, meeting with stakeholders, and pushing for a Committee Review.
Despite Labor’s majority forcing the Bill through in the Legislative Assembly, the Nationals have maintained their advocacy for fair, effective, and workable reform.
“The Nationals WA will always stand with the WA firearms community,” Mr Horstman said. “This motion will send a clear message to the Government”.
