Leader of The Nationals WA, Shane Love MLA, has called for a wide-ranging Royal Commission into the Bondi terrorist attack, saying “push has come to shove” in terms of the need for an overarching inquiry.
Mr Love said the only way to truly understand what has gone wrong — and how to ensure this kind of tragedy never occurs again — is to conduct a comprehensive, transparent national inquiry with immediate effect.
“Australia is now on a precipice in terms of raw emotion and volatility, and the government cannot afford to duck and dive any longer,” Mr Love said.
“Australian society is very vulnerable. People want answers and deserve answers, and we all have a role to ensure they get them.
“The only way to get the answers we need is through a wide-ranging inquiry. The cost and time involved are secondary.
“It is likely the government may be held accountable for decisions that have or haven’t been taken, but if that is the case, then let’s get to the bottom of it.”
Mr Love joins a growing number of proponents demanding a Royal Commission, including former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg; President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Daniel Aghion; New South Wales Premier Chris Minns; former Chief Justice Robert French; former AFP Detective Superintendent David Craig; RSL National President Peter Tinley; and Labor MPs Ed Husic and Mike Freelander.
