Hundreds of members from across Western Australia gathered in Mandurah over the weekend for The Nationals WA 2025 State Conference and Convention, where former Leader Hon Mia Davies was awarded Life Membership.
Ms Davies served in the WA Parliament for 17 years, leading The Nationals WA from 2017 to 2023 and serving as Leader of the Opposition between 2021 and 2023. Former Party President Julie Freeman bestowed the award, paying tribute to Ms Davies’ remarkable contribution.
“Mia’s contribution to The Nationals WA has been nothing short of extraordinary. She has been a tireless advocate for her communities, a steady hand through challenging times, and a leader who always placed people before politics,” Mrs Freeman said.
“Mia was part of the inaugural group of National Party MPs elected in 2008 who were responsible for creating and delivering Royalties for Regions – a landmark policy which went on to invest over $7 billion back into communities right across the State after decades of neglect.
“As Sports Minister in the Barnett-Grylls Government, Mia played a pivotal role in the design and construction of the world-famous Perth Stadium, and later, she became the first female leader of The National Party anywhere in Australia, and only the third woman to ever be WA Opposition Leader.
“Even after her retirement from State Parliament, Mia continued to fight hard for WA, contesting the Federal election to ensure voters in Bullwinkel had a real alternative to the big two major parties.
“Her legacy will continue to guide our Party for years to come, and we are immensely proud to honour her outstanding service with Life Membership.”
The Conference also marked a moment of renewal for the Party, with elections held for the State Executive.
After two years as State President, Julie Freeman stepped down, with former Shire of Harvey President and farmer Paul Gillet elected unopposed.
Mr Gillet said the Conference reinforced the strength of The Nationals WA’s grassroots base, with members debating policy ideas across key areas including the renewable energy transition, firearms, agriculture, and health.
“The Nationals WA are proudly a grassroots party, and it’s vital that our members continue to shape the policies we take forward. Together, we stand stronger than ever, ready to build a brighter future for regional Western Australia.”
