Member for Albany, Scott Leary MLA, has expressed deep disappointment following confirmation that the Albany Health Campus hydrotherapy pool will not be reinstated, with the State Government deeming the project “not financially viable.”
Mr Leary said the decision was a significant blow to the many Albany residents who rely on hydrotherapy for rehabilitation, pain management, and ongoing health conditions. “This is incredibly disappointing for our community,” Mr Leary said.
“For years, local patients, families, and health professionals have been calling for this service to be restored. Hydrotherapy is not a luxury, for many people, it is essential to maintaining mobility, independence and quality of life.”
The Minister for Health confirmed that despite a feasibility study and further modelling, the Government has ruled out recommissioning the facility due to the cost of required upgrades and ongoing operation.
Mr Leary said the response raises serious concerns about how regional health priorities are being assessed. “Time and again, regional communities are told projects aren’t ‘financially viable’ but that ignores the real cost to people who go without care.”
“This decision effectively leaves Albany without a fit-for-purpose, accessible hydrotherapy service, despite years of advocacy and a clear community need.”
Mr Leary also questioned the lack of transparency around the process. “The feasibility study has not been released to the public, despite repeated requests from community advocates. People deserve to see the information that led to this decision.”
He said the Government must now explain what comes next for patients.
“You can’t just shut the door on this and walk away. The community deserves to know what support will be put in place for those who relied on this service.”
Mr Leary reaffirmed his commitment to continue advocating for improved health services in Albany and across the Great Southern. “I will keep pushing for fair access to healthcare in our region because Albany deserves better than this.”
