Member for Roe and Deputy Leader of The Nationals WA Peter Rundle says the confirmation of a second case of H5 avian influenza in a northern giant petrel near Esperance is concerning but wants to reassure people that the situation is being monitored carefully and all levels of government are working together.
Mr Rundle said, “I have been in communication with the WA Minister for Agriculture, the Shadow Minister for Agriculture, the Shire of Esperance and locals.
While I understand there is apprehension in the local community and across our electorate about the second case of H5 avian influenza there can’t be division. We need all tiers of government, community and industry working together.”
“There is significant and warranted concern across our poultry, egg and broader agricultural industries as well as for our unique bird and marine mammal species which may be impacted.” Mr Rundle said.
The public are being urged to follow official advice and avoid handling sick or dead birds or marine mammals.
“This is an evolving situation, and I encourage all Western Australians to follow official biosecurity advice and report any concerns through the appropriate channels.” Mr Rundle said.
Mr Rundle said he will continue engaging with locals and stakeholders across the Roe Electorate, “I want to reassure Esperance locals and the broader community that WA’s biosecurity measures and surveillance systems are in place to protect our agricultural industries and unique wildlife.”
Any form of avian influenza is a reportable disease. Report any unusual mortalities, disease signs or reduced egg production to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
