Deputy Leader of The Nationals WA Mia Davies has paid tribute to the late Winifred Piesse, noting her legacy as the first woman to represent the Country Party in State Parliament.
Ms Davies said Ms Piesse would be remembered as a hardworking and passionate Member of Parliament, and for her tireless advocacy in health, education, children and youth affairs on behalf of the community.
“The Nationals WA extend our deepest condolences to the family of Winifred Piesse,” Ms Davies said.
“A nurse, midwife, farmer and Member of Parliament -Win embodied The Nationals’ strong values and fighting spirit.
“She wasn’t afraid to challenge convention – having run the family farm in her own right, as the first woman to serve on the Wagin Shire Council as a Shire Councillor and as a Justice of the Peace.”
Ms Piesse was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council in 1977 and served for a six year term in the Lower Central Province.
“Win was focused on improving rural education and women’s health outcomes and played a central role in securing the mammogram van to visit regional areas,” Ms Davies said.
“After leaving Parliament she remained committed to the community, serving on the local hospital board, and maintaining her association with the Country Women’s Association, Farmer’s Union and St John Ambulance.”
Ms Piesse was the only female member of the joint Liberal Country Party Room at the time she entered parliament.
“Win showed that women can be both strong leaders and successful in public life,” Ms Davies said.
