Member for Central Wheatbelt Hon Mia Davies MLA has called on the State Government to fund urgently needed upgrades to the intersection of Great Eastern Highway and the Avon Industrial Park (AIP).
“I have had firsthand experience, and feedback into my office from constituents, who see too many near misses at this very busy intersection on our major east-west highway,” Ms Davies said.
Ms Davies said the section of road was dangerous, particularly during harvest when grain is being carted into the site on a regular basis.
“I raised the matter with the Minister for Transport in February last year, and again in December, highlighting the ongoing concerns of road users and constituents who had contacted my office,” Ms Davies said.
“The Minister has advised that detailed designs and a cost estimate have been completed, but funding is yet to be allocated for the project.”
According to correspondence received from the Minister, planned upgrades include construction of dedicated turning pockets in both directions, along with acceleration lanes eastbound and westbound.
Ms Davies has urged the Minister to include the project in the upcoming State Budget. “I continue to seek clarification from the Government on the cost and timing of the project, and have asked the Minister for these details,” Ms Davies said.
“It’s outstanding that the Avon Industrial Park has now been fully tenanted, creating jobs and diversifying our local economy, but the State must recognise the importance of safe access to the site, and passage for those on the Great Eastern Highway.
“It would be a poor outcome for another year to pass without works being completed, putting all road users at risk as harvest rolls around again in twelve months’ time.”
Ms Davies thanked those in the community who raised their concerns with her office and encouraged constituents to continue to notify her of areas of concern on the road network throughout the electorate.
“As local Member I will always raise these concerns with MainRoads and the Government to assist in securing funding to improve our roads,” Ms Davies said.
“The Labor Government has a significant budget surplus, and our roads and safety should be a priority.”
