The Premier Roger Cook has been condemned by The Nationals WA after he again dismissed calls for a rescue helicopter to be based in the Mid West, despite a clear and urgent need.
At a press conference in Geraldton last week the Premier stated the recent Aeromedical Services WA Inquiry did not recommend a rescue helicopter to be based in the Mid West and therefore, would not commit to establishing the service.
Shadow Minister for Regional Health Martin Aldridge said the Premier’s comments were inaccurate, explaining that the Inquiry did in fact make this recommendation.
“The Inquiry’s recommendations made a strong case for expanding the rescue helicopter fleet to the Mid West, Goldfields and Pilbara.
“It is incredibly concerning the Premier has spouted inaccurate information and dismissed the recommendations.” said Mr Aldridge.
“The Nationals WA have been calling on the State Labor Government to establish a rescue helicopter based in Geraldton since 2017.”
Nationals’ candidate for Geraldton, Kirrilee Warr has recently renewed the Party’s commitment, pledging $45 million towards the service if returned to Government in 2025.
“We know from multiple reports and consultation with a range of stakeholders, a rescue helicopter based in Geraldton will save lives.” said Ms Warr.
“Whether it’s getting urgent medical treatment to road trauma victims, rescuing people at sea, or rapidly transporting patients to Perth – a rescue helicopter is a vital service to the Mid West.
“Just because you choose to live, work or holiday in a regional area, doesn’t mean you should have to accept a substandard level of healthcare and emergency response”.
Leader of The Nationals WA, Shane Love echoed these concerns and said arguments made by the Labor Government claiming a rescue helicopter based in Perth is sufficient, should be ignored.
“A Perth rescue helicopter cannot reach the distance and therefore must stop to refuel, wasting critical time.
“A Mid West based service is vital to ensure those who experience serious trauma are reached within the “golden hour” and have the best chance of survival.” Mr Love said.
“The Cook Labor Government’s lack of action on this front is unforgivable and will result in deaths in regional WA.”
