The Nationals WA candidate for Geraldton, Kirrilee Warr, has slammed the Cook Labor Government’s failure to address the alarming rise in violent crime in Geraldton, despite the much-hyped announcement of Operation Regional Shield in November.
Kirrilee Warr said that violent crime has escalated to unacceptable levels, leaving residents feeling vulnerable, and unsafe in their own community.
“Geraldton is at breaking point. Violent assaults, rampant car thefts and high-speed chases are happening in plain view, leaving the community scared and disillusioned.”
“It’s clear Police Minister Paul Papalia’s promises were nothing more than a PR stunt.”
Ms. Warr said the latest incident—a brutal assault on a defenceless woman at the Geraldton foreshore, caught on video and broadcast on television news—has outraged the community.
“These are real people suffering real harm. Workers are scared to return to jobs after being attacked, and local businesses are struggling under the weight of escalating anti-social behaviour in public places,” Ms. Warr said.
Despite the Cook Government’s fanfare surrounding Operation Regional Shield, Ms. Warr said Geraldton has seen no meaningful benefit.
“Where are the results? The situation is getting worse, not better, The Minister’s priorities seem focused on photo opportunities, not fixing the crisis.”
“Police statistics prove 2024 has been a dreadful year for Geraldton, with 4,491 offences recorded in the first six months of the year alone. At that rate 2024 is on track for almost 9,000 offences – a massive increase from last year which saw a record 8,070 charges.” Ms. Warr said.
“Minister Papalia and the local Labor Member must urgently address this escalating crisis. With summer and school holidays in full swing, further inaction is simply not an option.”
Kirrilee Warr said The Nationals WA will deliver real solutions for Geraldton, including:
• Permanent police officers: Reducing reliance on FIFO policing to build trust and ensure long-term safety.
• Expanded infrastructure: Addressing overcrowding at Greenough Prison to stop the local courts from becoming revolving doors for offenders.
Diversionary programs: Funding initiatives proven to reduce crime and deliver better outcomes for regional communities.
“The Nationals WA will not stop fighting for Geraldton’s safety and future.
This community deserves action, not excuses, from the Cook Labor Government,” Ms. Warr said.
