West Coast Fever are taking their skills and expertise to Albany this week.
Netball WA has received $9,000 from the State Government, through the Department of Sport and Recreation, for the West Coast Fever Albany pre-season camp from today until February 18, 2016.
Coming off their most successful season ever in 2015, which included four players joining the Australian Netball Diamonds for a three-test English tour last month, the star-studded Fever team will begin training hard in Albany for the 2016 season.
The team, along with captain Ash Brazill and vice-captain Caitlin Bassett, will also be doing a number of community engagement activities such as primary school visits, coaching clinics, master classes and a community event to meet players and coaches.
Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the visit was a chance for the team to play a role in developing and increasing netball participation in Albany and promoting its value both on and off the court.
“This is an opportunity for these influential athletes to add something to the development of sport in the Great Southern,” Ms Davies said.
“This is also a great example of strong female role models going out into the regions to share their experiences and skills.”
As part of the Government’s highly popular and successful KidSport program, 475 children aged five to 18 have started playing netball in Albany.
“We know kids who are active have better learning outcomes, but we also know that being more active at any age benefits not only your physical health but also your mental health,” the Minister said.
The West Coast Fever pre-season camp will involve 26 players, coaches and support staff.
The funding falls under the Department of Sport and Recreation’s Country Sport Enrichment Scheme as part of the high-performance strategic investment framework.
