Households in Kalgoorlie-Boulder used 100 million litres less water in 2016, compared with the same eight-month period last year.
Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC congratulated the local households that took part in the water efficiency program.
“These savings were the equivalent of more than 44 Olympic-sized swimming pools,” Mr Grills said.
“The savings were achieved through the Liberal National Government’s Waterwise Towns Program, delivered through and with assistance from the Water Corporation.
“Through the program, personalised water use advice was provided to households via a series of letters or emails based on information gathered through smart water meters.”
Smart water meters allow households to access detailed information about their water use through My Water. The My Water program identifies spikes in use or continuous flows which could indicate a leak.
“Reducing water use forms part of the State Government’s Water Forever plans to secure water supplies in the drying climate.”
Member for Kalgoorlie Wendy Duncan MLA said she was pleased with the overall reduction in water use, which was due to the dedication of participants to save water in the drying climate.
“The program has been a huge success in Kalgoorlie-Boulder with households getting involved through analysing patterns in their water use, making small changes and seeing a decrease in their water use as a result,” Ms Duncan said.
