The Shire of Jerramungup will share with other WA communities in $551,000 in funding for strategic coastal planning and management projects.
Local MP Terry Waldron said the approved projects would improve the condition and amenity of the State’s highly valued coastline.
The 23 successful projects have been awarded grants under the latest round of the State Government’s 2016-17 Coastwest and Coastal Management Plan Assistance program.
“WA has more than 20,000 kilometres of coastline, and these diverse projects tackle specific regional issues,” Mr Waldron said.
“Several projects will also focus on identifying coastal hazards and developing strategies to adapt to the potential risks of climate change and rising sea levels.”
Mr Waldron said the local Shire of Jerramungup had been allocated $40,000 for the Review of Coastal Management Plan project.
“Congratulations to the hardworking team at the Shire of Jerramungup on another successful grant application,” he said.
“I am pleased that their commitment to the local environment and protecting the beautiful coastline in the region has been recognised.”
Nationals WA candidate for Roe Peter Rundle said these programs reflected the importance of good coastal planning, as well as on-ground management.
“These grants represent a great opportunity for coastal communities like Jerramungup,” Mr Rundle said.
Mr Waldron said the State Government’s commitment to enhancing our coastline was shared by many, with most successful projects being led by local governments and involving coastal community volunteers and groups.
The total value of this year’s projects, with Government funding, is more than $1.55 million.
The latest funding allocations support the Western Australian Planning Commission’s State Coastal Planning Policy, which guides land use and development along WA’s coast.
Since the program began, close to 700 projects worth more than $15.5 million have been funded by Coastwest and the Coastal Management Plan Assistance program.
