The Liberal National Government today announced a $15.9 million investment for the construction of affordable student accommodation in Albany.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said Stage 2 of the Affordable Student Accommodation project would see the construction of a 40-bed facility on the old Albany Primary School site on Serpentine Road, and would be available to students attending local higher education institutions.
“This project will help attract and retain higher education students who would not otherwise remain in the region,” he said.
“Increasing tertiary student accommodation options in the Great Southern encourages students to stay in their community longer and builds a broader skill base in the region, leading to a stronger regional economy.”
Deputy Premier and Training and Workforce Development Minister Liza Harvey said the project was important in providing quality and affordable housing for students who wanted to study in Albany, including those attending South Regional TAFE.
“South Regional TAFE attracts students from across the State and Australia, as well as from overseas, so this project will provide significant benefits and greater options for people who want to study locally,” Mrs Harvey said.
“Following recent changes to the State’s public training sector, South Regional TAFE will offer expanded course options, which will further increase opportunities for students.”
The Liberal National Government’s $15.9 million Stage 2 of the Affordable Student Accommodation project was made possible by a $10.9 investment from Royalties for Regions, $1 million from the Great Southern Community Housing Association and an in-kind contribution of $4 million from the Department of Education.
