The City of Karratha has been awarded $20,000 to create a local learning site as part of the ABCD Community Builder Learning Sites national initiative, through the Community Development Program (CDP) and made possible by Royalties for Regions.
Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC said CDP was part of the Country Local Government Fund’s Local Government Capacity Building program, which enables regional local governments to build stronger partnerships with community sector organisations to improve service delivery.
Mr Grills said that under the initiative, regional councils could apply for grants of up to $20,000 to undertake community development programs in collaboration with community organisations.
“Congratulations to the City of Karratha on their successful application,” he said.
“Through this excellent initiative, the city can ensure that resources remain within the region and can build the local capacity of city staff and community organisations.
“The project will feature a peer learning and sharing component, with more than 70 participating towns in Australia.
“The focus will be on Dampier and Roebourne initially.”
Mr Grills said the model empowered local residents to become co-creators of their future.
“Projects like this are great as they are community-led and the specific needs of the community can be targeted to benefit locals,” he said.
“This particular project will give residents access to a wide range of practical tools, asset-mapping resources, support material, and a means to host conversations.”
Mr Grills said regional local governments had a need for modern facilities and services and faced a number of unique social issues.
“The CDP encourages more innovative and collaborative approaches to overcome challenges and progress community development in regional WA,” he said.
“I’m pleased to see Royalties for Regions investing in programs, such as this one at Karratha, which help deliver tailored services to best meet the needs of regional communities.”
