Pilbara residents will benefit from a $59.75 million joint investment by the Liberal National Government and industry to redevelop the Newman Health Service.
The project will receive $49.75 million from the Government’s North West Health Initiative, made possible by Royalties for Regions, with an extra $10 million from BHP Billiton.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman toured the Newman Health Service today and welcomed BHP Billiton’s contribution.
“Quality health infrastructure and services are fundamental to the ongoing viability and development of regional Western Australia, and are an important investment for Royalties for Regions,” Mr Redman said.
“The Newman Health Service Redevelopment Project will provide state-of-the-art health facilities for the Newman region, including the surrounding centres of Marble Bar and Nullagine.”
Health Minister John Day said the new hospital would include a six-bay emergency department, a 12-bed inpatient unit and an ambulatory healthcare centre with outpatient facilities, plus pathology, dental and medical imaging services.
“Improvements to regional health infrastructure and services are part of the State Government’s plan for more community focused healthcare,” Mr Day said. “The new Newman hospital facilities will help reduce the need for patients to travel away from home and family to neighbouring regions, or even to metropolitan sites.”
The North West Health Initiative is a five-year program which will bring state-of-the-art health and aged care facilities to the Pilbara.
The Newman Health Service redevelopment is expected to start late in 2017 and be completed by mid-2019.
