- Exmouth Festival of Sport introduces new and loved sports to youth
- Festival brings communities together to be active
Exmouth will be full of slam dunks and ollies this weekend when the regional town kicks off its Festival of Sport.
Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies opened the festival today and congratulated the Gascoyne town for throwing the spotlight on sport and active recreation from July 9-15.
“Through this festival, the people of Exmouth are demonstrating the power of sport to bring young people together and I encourage everyone to get involved and have a go at an activity they might not normally play,” Ms Davies said.
The Exmouth Festival of Sport is designed to give local under-18s a chance to participate in new and different sports, as well as compete against their peers from around the region.
It will feature skills clinics, come and try sessions and round robin sports carnivals in ultimate frisbee, surfing, skateboarding, football, soccer and basketball.
“In Exmouth, there’s not often the opportunity to compete against other regional teams, so the festival will bring a number of communities together in the name of sport and will help foster connections between regional youth,” the Minister said.
“Basketball and soccer competitions are only in their second season in Exmouth, so this festival will introduce more people to these sports and encourage them to get involved.”
The festival is being organised by the Shire of Exmouth’s club development officer, Amanda Fuery.
The Liberal National Government, through the Department of Sport and Recreation, supports local communities through funding the Club Development Officer program across Western Australia.
Ms Davies said she was also pleased to see the recovery Exmouth had made in the wake of last year’s Tropical Cyclone Olwyn.
