Member for Moore Shane Love MLA has expressed his disappointment that Toodyay’s proposed recreation facility has been overlooked in the latest round of the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.
A key feature of the Toodyay Shire’s $23 million sporting hub proposal is a public aquatic centre within a sporting precinct that would also cater for outdoor field sports.
Mr Love said the Toodyay pool project proposed a six-lane, 25metre outdoor lap pool, a smaller splash pool with beach entry, a splash pad with water playground and passive recreation features.
“Toodyay is the second oldest inland town in the state, it is a community that is growing and the pool and sporting facility have been a community aspiration for 15 years,” Mr Love said.
“The lack of Federal Building Better Regions funding is beyond disappointing and I fear that without State Government support, this project is unlikely to proceed” he added.
“I call on the State Government to back this project, which in turn will allow the Toodyay Shire to leverage Federal funding.
The Nationals committed $10 million Royalties for Regions funding to the project if returned at the last election.
In addition to the pool, the Toodyay Shire’s proposed recreation project was to include a lit multi-purpose oval and separate lit rectangular field, four outdoor netball/basketball courts, an elevated viewing area and multiple change room facilities.
Mr Love said Toodyay’s population was approaching 5,000 and the priority status of the project was reflected in the Shire of Toodyay’s Community Strategic Plan.
“This facility will get widespread use and provide a venue where locals can stay active, learn new skills, participate in club and competition sport and remain socially connected through sport and recreation,” he added.
“I will continue to advocate for funding for this important project.”
