The new $4.2 million Boddington Sport and Recreation Centre is officially open for sporting clubs and the Boddington community to use.
Sport and Recreation Minister and Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies opened the new venue with Wagin MP Terry (Tuck) Waldron, Shire of Boddington representatives and local community members today.
Ms Davies said redevelopment of the Boddington Recreation Precinct was long anticipated and made possible thanks to a $2.5 million Royalties for Regions investment.
“The new indoor multipurpose training centre and change rooms will be home to the Boddington Eagles Football Club, Boddington Netball Club and Boddington Badminton Club,” she said.
“Importantly, the venue replaces the town’s outdated multipurpose courts and pavilion and is situated ideally nearby Boddington District High School for use by the school community.”
Ms Davies said the State Government supported the project through a $610,000 Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund grant in addition to Royalties for Regions funding.
The Shire committed $1 million, Charles Hull Contracting donated upward of $100,000 in ground works along with financial and in-kind donations from Boddington Hardware and the local netball and football clubs.
“Good community and sporting facilities are more than a building, a patch of grass or a netball court,” Ms Davies said.
“Facilities like this offer a modern, vibrant hub for the community to gather and attract greater participation in sport and recreation, which keeps people socially connected and healthy.”
Mr Waldron praised the Shire and community for planning the project and volunteer support that had gone into getting the facility built.
“We knew every Royalties for Regions dollar provided to the Boddington community for this project would leverage more funding and get this great project off the ground,” he said.
“This will provide a great training and playing facility for the current and next generation of players, coaches, officials and spectators.”
Work is also underway between the Shire, Water Corporation and Department of Water to improve the old town dam and provide more than 20,000 kilolitres of irrigation water for the sporting oval, saving the Shire roughly $45,000 in scheme water costs per year.
