The Nationals WA have today announced candidates for the Legislative Assembly seats of Bunbury, Central Wheatbelt, Geraldton, Kimberley and Moore ahead of the 2017 State Election.
Leader of The Nationals WA Terry Redman MLA said a strong, independent, and passionate team had assembled to represent the best interests of regional families, businesses and communities.
“I’m delighted to announce these five candidates who will seek to champion regional WA and safeguard the future of Royalties for Regions in State Parliament,” Mr Redman said.
Joining The Nationals WA team is Broome lawyer and consultant Rob Houston who will contest the Seat of Kimberley. Mr Houston and his family have lived and worked in the Kimberley for the past eight years, working for KRED Enterprises, KRED Legal and the Kimberley Land Council. He is the son of Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston.
City of Bunbury councillor and State President of The Nationals WA, James Hayward, will contest the Seat of Bunbury. Mr Hayward is a small-business owner and a former journalist and television presenter.
Agricultural region MP Paul Brown will vacate his upper-house seat to contest the Seat of Geraldton. Mr Brown and his family live in Geraldton and he has been a strong advocate of the community in State Parliament.
Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies MLA and Member for Moore Shane Love MLA will both return to contest their respective seats.
Leader of The Nationals WA, Terry Redman MLA, said only The Nationals WA could safeguard the future of Royalties for Regions.
“In recent months, both major parties have come out saying they would like to see Royalties for Regions changed or scaled back.
“Only The Nationals WA can ensure that Royalties for Regions continues to deliver the best outcomes for regional WA and doesn’t become watered down by the Perth-focused major parties.”
Mr Redman reiterated The Nationals WA’s role as an independent political party heading into the State election.
“We have assembled an excellent team of local champions and we look forward to a State election campaign that puts regional issues front and centre.”
The Nationals WA candidates for 2017 also include
- Member for Warren-Blackwood Terry Redman MLA;
- Member for North West Central Vince Catania MLA;
- Member for Pilbara Brendon Grylls MLA;
- Former Federal MP and chair of the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission Tony Crook for Kalgoorlie,
- Katanning farmer, businessman and former Great Southern Development Commission chair Peter Rundle for Roe.
Pre-selection for the Legislative Council and Federal election will take place later today and tomorrow.
