Member for Moore Shane Love MLA has written to the Leader of the Federal Nationals and Minister for Regional Development, calling on Minister McCormack to secure the $8.7million Federal funding for the Moora College, announced on September 4.
Mr Love said as the Federal Government nears the end of its current term, the Moora community needed confidence that the money would be secured in a signed funding agreement.
“We want to act immediately to avoid a repeat of the circumstances that lead to so much angst and distress for those in the Central Midlands when the McGowan Labor government came to power,” Mr Love said.
“Labor chose not to honour a decision of the former Liberal-National State Cabinet made in August 2016 that committed $8.7 million for refurbishment of Moora College. “I have asked Minister McCormack to guarantee the Federal Government’s $8.7 million Community Development Grants funding and to distribute the funds to the State as soon as possible.”
Mr Love acknowledged the work of Minister McCormack for stepping in to provide certainty for students and families that use Moora Residential College.
“Moora College is a state government responsibility but it has taken the intervention of the Federal Coalition to save it,” Mr Love said. “I want to also thank Durack MP, Melissa Price and Deputy Leader of the Nationals, Bridget McKenzie who took the Moora College fight to Canberra.”
The Federal Government’s $8.7 million funding commitment to refurbish the Moora College ends nine months of uncertainty for students and families in the Central Midlands.
“This is a hard-earned victory for people power and regional education and I commend the community for their relentless campaign to Save Moora College,” Mr Love said. “The Nationals stand by their commitment to building an education precinct in Moora incorporating a K-12 community college with the local TAFE, should they form government in 2021.”
