Member for Moore and Leader of The Nationals WA Shane Love has condemned the State Labor Government for their delayed action on the Jurien Bay Marina.
Despite the State Government announcing a $17.5 million package to extend the northern breakwater in May, no progress has been made and no timeline has been given to the community on when they can expect the four year project to begin.
Mr Love said Jurien Bay locals and visitors are fed up with the poor state of the Marina which has led to fish kills and other environmental consequences due to the Government’s inaction.
“The community has been forced to endure a foul stench wafting from the Marina as predictable winter swells bring large deposits of seaweed into the harbour.”
“The delays have also stymied the development in the Marina precinct as no one would want to invest while the fish kills continue,” he said.
“It’s been an environmental and economic disaster.”
Mr Love said Labor had refused to fund Jurien Bay’s spur groyne for the past four years, despite clocking up billions of dollars in surpluses.
“Four years ago, the project was costed at $7.8 million and now it has blown out to be over $17 million.”
“Ten years ago when The Nationals WA were in Government, we instigated the Jurien Boat Harbour Steering Committee that saw proposed designs modelled to future tides, wind, wave and weed movement”.
“It’s incredibly disappointing to see that Labor has had these plans for nine years and has failed to act on them”
Mr Love said the Jurien Bay Marina will be added to Labor’s long list of overpromised and underdelivered projects, with design and construction contracts for the Jurien Bay groyne extension ‘expected’ to be awarded next year.
“The Jurien Bay Marina has been put on the sidelines while the State Labor Government prioritises subsiding luxury apartment developments in Perth.”
“The community of Jurien Bay deserve better.”
