The Nationals WA have launched a petition this week urging the State Government to address the deteriorating conditions of roads in the Mid West region.
Leader Shane Love described the current state of infrastructure in the region as nothing short of appalling.
“After a wet winter, roads across the Mid West are in a dire state,” Mr Love said.
“Potholes are everywhere, road shoulders are collapsing, and the surface is literally falling apart. Yet the Government is standing by without any plan to fix this critical infrastructure.”
Mr Love highlighted the frustration of local residents, especially in light of the significant economic activity in the region.
“The Mid West and Murchison regions are booming with major resource projects, leading to a surge in heavy vehicle movements,” Mr Love said.
“Over 17 million tonnes of exports are currently being transported through the Geraldton Port, and that figure is expected to rise to 25 million tonnes per year in the next decade.
“Despite this, there’s no strategic plan from the Government to ensure our crumbling roads can support this increase.”
Mr Love said the condition of the Geraldton-Mount Magnet Road was a major concern and was currently being inundated with over 200 quad rain train movements daily.
“This road is a lifeline for communities like Mount Magnet, Yalgoo and Mullewa, yet it’s in shocking state,” he said.
“Rest bays are scarce, safe overtaking lanes are almost non-existent, and the current road conditions are blatantly unsafe.”
Nationals candidate for Geraldton, Kirrilee Warr, said the current conditions were the worst she had ever seen and accused the Labor Government of turning a blind eye.
“The historic Mullewa town centre has been reduced to a mudhole,” Ms Warr said.
“The road is virtually destroyed in one direction and should be closed, but with a road train passing every six minutes, there’s simply no time for repairs.”
Ms Warr also pointed out the potential dangers with the forthcoming wildflower season.
“With up to 10,000 visitors expected over the next two months, the mix of tourists, heavy vehicles, and deteriorating roads is a disaster waiting to happen.”
The Nationals WA are calling on all concerned residents to sign the petition, which will remain open until 25 October. It can be signed online here https://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/Parliament/LCePetitions.nsf/petitions/24-0032?
