Merredin and Hyden are set for upgrades to sports courts thanks to over $40,000 in grants through the State Government’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
Announcing the grants last week, Member for Central Wheatbelt and Minister for Sport and Recreation Hon Mia Davies MLA said 19 projects across the State, including 13 in regional WA, would share in over $526,000 in funding under the latest round of the CSRFF scheme.
“These grants for projects under $200,000 can make a great difference to local sporting clubs and the community’s ability to participate,” Ms Davies said.
“The CSRFF small grants are specifically for local sport and recreation clubs, and councils requiring financial help to complete a project that might otherwise be out of reach.”
Merredin will resurface four outdoor netball/basketball courts with plexipave at the Regional and Community Leisure Centre, while Hyden’s tennis courts will receive new light poles.
Ms Davies said the upgrades meant the old, tired courts would be getting a much needed facelift.
“The new surface in Merredin will improve safety and provide a more durable and long lasting court, and improved lighting in Hyden will enable tennis to be played later into the evening,” she said.
Nationals Member for the Agricultural Region Hon Martin Aldridge MLC also welcomed the grant and praised the CSRFF for delivering for Merredin and Hyden’s local sporting clubs.
“CSRFF is a great program because it is helping the development of sustainable infrastructure for sport and recreation throughout the Wheatbelt,” he said.
“Enabling these towns to invest in better facilities has flow on effects to visiting sporting clubs and the community as a whole.
“Better facilities attract more members, and this leads to better health and social outcomes for the community.”
The State Government has invested more than $156 million in more than 980 sport and recreation facilities across the State since 2009.
There are two Small Grants rounds a year and incorporated sporting clubs and local governments are eligible to apply. The next round opens on 1 July and closes on 31 August.
The main round of CSRFF is now open and closes on 16 September 2016.
