Opposition Leader Mia Davies has welcomed the lively and passionate debate witnessed as the YMCA Youth Parliament has been held over the past few days.
Addressing the participants today, Ms Davies told of her own beginnings in politics and encouraged everyone to stay involved in the political process as they progress in their studies and careers.
“We need more young people involved, bringing their views and experiences to the decision we make as a Parliament and in political Parties,” Ms Davies said.
“The bills debated this week have been well-considered and researched, and the debate has been passionate and well-articulated.
“It was heartening to see a Regional Development Bill introduced and passed – an accomplishment the Youth Members should be proud of.”
Ms Davies met with her counterpart, the Youth Member for the Central Wheatbelt Connor Blight from Brookton, as well as Youth Premier Amy Astill, who hails from Kalgoorlie and a number of other regional participants.
“It is encouraging to see young people from all over the State taking part, explaining what it means for them living in remote or country communities and in our inner city suburbs.
“Whether it’s access to education, mental health services, employment pathways or finding affordable housing – the regions can present great opportunity for young people, but also some challenges.”
The Nationals WA Member for the South West James Hayward also congratulated the 2021 Youth Parliament on their work, after chairing a session full of fresh ideas and debate.
“The bills and motions put forward have been met with enthusiasm from all sides of politics and I hope to see this enthusiasm in future years as you take up your own political careers.”
