Western Australian architects, designers and builders are being invited to Step Up to the challenge of building affordable, accessible and sustainable medium density housing for tomorrow’s homebuyers.
Launching LandCorp’s Step Up Affordable Housing Design Competition today, Lands Minister Terry Redman said the contest was a unique opportunity to explore innovative and creative solutions to the challenges of medium and higher density living.
“Step Up will encourage industry partners, including designers, developers, builders and architects to think outside the box and test the boundaries of current practices,” Mr Redman said.
“LandCorp will work with industry partners to make a significant contribution to the affordable housing challenge and create opportunities that improve housing diversity and choice.”
The Minister said the Liberal National Government had a critical role to play in supporting innovative solutions to the challenges of rapid population growth and housing affordability.
“We are committed to finding new ways to live sustainably in our cities and towns by continuing to develop a wider range of affordable housing solutions in the Perth metro area,” he said.
“By 2050, we anticipate the Perth and Peel region will reach a population of 3.5 million people so we need to plan for the future of our city now.”
The Step Up Affordable Housing Design Competition will feature three design phases with the winning entry to be constructed at LandCorp’s Shoreline development at Cockburn Coast.
Mr Redman said the winning design would be judged on criteria including the use of climate responsive design, innovative materials and products to achieve high levels of energy and water efficiency, and measures that reduced ongoing running costs.
“Entries will be judged on their level of cost-effective, practical design solutions and how they optimise new building technologies without compromising liveability and design quality,” he said.
Step Up seeks to improve the design and supply of medium density housing for Perth infill developments and to encourage a city-wide drive for more affordable housing solutions.
