Kalgoorlie MLA, Wendy Duncan, has welcomed the announcement that a $25million upgrade to East Perth train station will begin this month.
Ms Duncan had been actively advocating for an elevator to be installed at the East Perth train station to assist elderly passengers and those with mobility issues who struggle with luggage on the station’s pedestrian overpass when accessing the Prospector train service and regional bus services.
The upgrades will see a more modern, accessible station that is able to cope with more capacity expected once the Perth Stadium opens and ensure that the busy station is Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant and will include:-
Replacing the existing pedestrian bridge with a new wider and DDA compliant, fully-roofed bridge north of its current location.
Extending the existing concourse roof to cover the platform and create more shelter.
Increasing access to the concourse via stairs and lifts.
DDA upgrades including resurfacing of the platform, new tactile marking and the installation of four lifts (one at the East Parade side of the station, two that connect to the platform and one at the West Parade side).
Increasing the length of the platforms to accommodate four and six-car trains.
Installation of a rail crossover which will provide operational resilience to the Transperth network by providing the ability for new train movements on the Midland Line during disruptions.
Reconfiguring the Public Transport Centre’s West Parade car park to enable the installation of the new elevators and stairs, bike facilities as well as providing a forecourt area for bus replacement services and Perth Stadium events.
“Major upgrades like this benefit a huge cross-section of the community and these ones will ensure that accessibility at the East Perth Station will assist people of all abilities in making their travels streamlined and effortless,” said Ms Duncan.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
