Hydrants to be installed across regional WA

Part of State Government’s $12.5 million, five-year program to install 2,900 extra hydrants across the State
Twenty-six regional towns and suburbs will benefit from 395 new fire hydrants to be installed by the Water Corporation over the coming months.
Water Minister Mia Davies said hydrants would be installed at Babbage Island, Bilingurr, Boodarie, Broome, Carnarvon, Coral Bay, Denham, Derby, Exmouth, Fitzroy Crossing, Greys Plain, Halls Creek, Karratha, Kingsford, Kununurra, Marble Bar, Minyirr, Newman, Nullagine, Onslow, Port Hedland, Roebourne, Roebuck, South Hedland, Wedgefield and Wyndham.
The new hydrants formed part of the State Government’s $12.5 million, five-year program to install 2,900 extra hydrants across Western Australia.
“About 1,100 fire hydrants have been installed since the five-year program began in 2015, in both metropolitan and regional areas,” Ms Davies said.
The corporation will also install 177 new hydrants in 15 suburbs in the Perth Hills from this month.
“The corporation has consulted with local government authorities, Main Roads WA and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to determine locations for the new fire hydrants. Community advice has also been important to ensure they are installed in the best possible locations,” the Minister said.
Ms Davies reminded people living in high bushfire risk areas that they should still have an independent water supply if they choose to stay and actively defend their home during a bushfire.
“While the corporation will do all it can to maintain scheme water during a bushfire, damaged infrastructure or a cut to power may result in a total loss of public water supplies,” she said.
