The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community Garden celebrates its official opening over the weekend where gardeners and the not so green fingers have developed a fantastic communal gardening space for all to enjoy.
Member for Kalgoorlie, Wendy Duncan MLA, said the Community Garden, which offers a communal area, garden plots, shared garden beds, worm farms, compost bins, and plans to develop a native bush tucker garden and a chook yard will be a welcomed outdoor learning space and community hub for the City.
“Supported by Royalties for Regions Community Chest Fund, the Community Garden is a place where people come together to garden collectively with a ‘hands on’ approach, creating an environment for people of all generations to nurture and enjoy,” Ms Duncan said.
“I have been supporting this initiative since it was a germ and it is satisfying to see it flourish into a successful project for Kalgoorlie-Boulder.”
Ms Duncan said that she was hopeful other groups throughout the Goldfields would take up the challenge to begin community gardens, with funding available to establish and maintain community gardens available through the Grants for Gardens, offered by the Department of Local Government and Communities.
Through the program up to $20,000 is available to create a new garden and $10,000 for existing spaces. Funds may be used for planning, workshops, signage, infrastructure and community engagement projects.
“I encourage people to come along on Sunday and see what a difference a community garden can bring to your local area.”
The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community Garden celebrate their official opening on Sunday the 28 August, with the garden open between 9am and 12pm and official proceedings beginning at 10am. The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community Garden is located at Memorial Drive, Kalgoorlie.
