Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC is encouraging new and existing regional voters to check their enrolment status by 6pm on February 9, 2017 to ensure their vote counts at the State election.
Mr Grills said eligible voters who had changed their name or address must update their enrolment status with the West Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC).
“I encourage all eligible voters throughout the Mining and Pastoral Region to check their enrolment details to ensure they don’t miss out on the opportunity to shape the future direction of our State with their vote,” Mr Grills said.
“Enrolling and voting is compulsory in WA and if you’re not registered by February 9 then you won’t have the opportunity to cast your vote on March 11.”
Mr Grills said voting was an important part of the democratic process and enabled everyday West Australians to have their say.
“As of December 2016, only 396,343 of total of 1,590,527 electors were registered to vote in regional WA,” he said.
Mr Grills said regional residents needed to ensure their voice was heard at the ballot box.
“With regional voters vastly outnumbered by city-based voters, it has never been more pressing for country people to use the power of their vote,” he said.
“We have to make sure our concerns are heard and that we have strong representatives in State Parliament.”
New voters may enrol online or collect an enrolment form from the Commissioner’s office, any AEC office or local post offices.
Enrolment forms must be signed and returned to the WAEC as per instructions on the form.
