Esperance families will soon have access to a state-of-the-art maternity ward as part of the latest stage of the State Government’s $32.75 million redevelopment of the Esperance Health Campus.
Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC joined Minister for Regional Development Terry Redman in Esperance today for the official opening of the new maternity ward and day surgery facilities.
Mr Grills said it was paramount that regional centres such as Esperance had updated maternity services available for local women and their families.
“It is imperative that Esperance residents are able to receive the same quality maternity and birthing services that they would experience in the metropolitan area,” Mr Grills said.
“High-quality healthcare is key to improving regional liveability and I am glad to see another milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of the Esperance Health Campus.
“The Esperance Health Campus has come a long way over the last few years thanks to significant Royalties for Regions investment.
“This multi-stage redevelopment will enhance healthcare for not only Esperance residents but also for people in the wider region, including Ravensthorpe and Norseman.”
As part of the latest upgrades, a Level One neonatal nursery for the care of infants requiring intervention in their precious first days of life, plus an antenatal consulting room, will be available.
“The two new birthing suites are located close-by to the new surgical services department to allow for the quick transfer of patients should a caesarean be required,” Mr Grills said.
Nationals WA candidate for Roe Peter Rundle said the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program had contributed $18.8 million towards the project.
“This investment is providing expectant and new mums with maternity facilities in their community so they can remain close to home and their families while receiving quality obstetric care,” Mr Rundle said.
“Investment in quality health infrastructure and services is fundamental in supporting the development of a strong and sustainable regional Western Australia.”
The Esperance hospital redevelopment is being staged to minimise service disruption to the community.
The upgrades are expected to be completed by late 2017.
