The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Aboriginal short stay facility will undergo a $1.3million upgrade made possible by Royalties for Regions.
Member for Kalgoorlie, Wendy Duncan MLA, said the facility had keys handed over in September 2012 after it was identified that there was a shortage of short-term accommodation for Aboriginal people visiting Kalgoorlie-Boulder for family, health, business or cultural reasons.
It had proved to be a great asset to the wider community and for those in need of short-stay accommodation with the facility providing about 14,000 bed nights of short-term accommodation since 2013. Ms Duncan said that the upgrade will provide enhancements to the accommodation, which will include six family units with ensuites, lighting, commercial-grade air-conditioning, along with improving security and access for visitors with disability. Landscaping, paths and driveways will also be included in the upgrade.
“The Kalgoorlie-Boulder short stay facility has ensured that the wellbeing of visitors to Kalgoorlie-Boulder from outlying remote communities is met through the provision of a comfortable, safe and place to stay,” Ms Duncan said.
“It is great to see that Royalties for Regions continues to identify these projects as essential for our region and that their growth and viability are fundamental.”
Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Dave Grills MLC has also welcomed the announcement.
“These important upgrades will allow the short-stay accommodation facility in Kalgoorlie to continue to meet the needs of visitors and the wider community,” Mr Grills said.
“This has proven to be a valuable service in the community and even more people will benefit once these refurbishments have been completed. I am pleased that Royalties for Regions has invested in this significant local project.”
Royalties for Regions has contributed a total of $2.55million to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder short stay facility.
