Kojonup’s Kevin O’Halloran Memorial Pool was one of eleven centres across the State recognised as waterwise by Water Corporation and the Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics (LIWA) at the LIWA State conference on Monday night.
Member for Wagin Terry Waldron MLA congratulated the Shire of Kojonup, which manages the pool, for its water saving efforts.
“The management of the Kojonup swimming pool has made an outstanding commitment to water efficiency by carrying out an extensive review of how they use water and developed a management plan to achieve ongoing water savings,” Mr Waldron said.
To be endorsed as Waterwise an aquatic centre must demonstrate a number of water saving measures including reading water meters daily, reporting and repairing any leaks detected, displaying water saving information for patrons, installing minimum rated water efficient fixtures and fittings, as well as minimising water use for operations such as backwashing and irrigation.
In addition to the minimum water saving measures, the Kojonup swimming pool was able to detect and resolve anomalies in their irrigation system with the help of a data logger on their water meter. The centre also uses pool blankets on a daily basis to limit water loss through evaporation.
“I encourage aquatic centres across Western Australia to get involved in the free Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program to demonstrate their commitment to being waterwise,” Mr Waldron said.
The State Government, through Water Corporation, has worked with LIWA to promote water efficiency in aquatic centres, which has helped the industry save more than 700 million litres since 2008 – which, in aquatic centre terms, is about 280 Olympic sized pools.
Nationals WA candidate for Roe Peter Rundle said the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program was open to all aquatic and leisure centres in WA.
Non-residential water use accounts for about 24 per cent of total water use across the State.
